At PE Fuel Distributors, we believe in keeping our customers informed and protected. A recent BusinessTech article has sounded serious alarm bells for diesel consumers across South Africa, and we want to break down the key takeaways for you.

A Growing Problem: Contaminated Diesel

South Africa is facing a major issue with contaminated diesel due to illegal fuel mixing. this occurs when blending untaxed illuminating paraffin with diesel ,making the fuel cheaper to produce and sell, but extremely damaging to engines and machinery. In some extreme cases, tests have reflected diesel to contain up to 68% paraffin.

This illegal practice:

  • Costs SARS an estimated R3.6 billion annually
  • Damages vehicle engines and equipment
  • Hurts consumers and reputable fuel retailers alike

How It Works

Because paraffin is cheaper by R6-7 per litre and not taxed, unscrupulous dealers use it to dilute diesel. The fuel is then sold at “bargain” prices, but often without consumers realising the hidden risk.

According to SARS, importers and distributors across the country are under-declaring fuel volumes and engaging in large-scale fuel laundering operations. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and SARS have already seized nearly a million litres of tainted fuel and R367 million worth of assets from criminal networks and unscrupulous dealers .

The Impact on You

If you’re filling up with diesel, whether for personal use, farming, transport, or business, this issue directly affects you. Contaminated diesel can:

  • Lead to costly engine repairs
  • Shorten your vehicle or equipment lifespan
  • Increase operational downtime

Worse still, it’s often sold unknowingly to consumers through seemingly legitimate outlets.

What Can You Do?

Avhapfani Tshifularo, Executive Director of the South African Petroleum Association, urges diesel users to stay vigilant:

  • Be cautious of diesel sold at unusually low prices
  • Prefer reputable, well-known outlets
  • Avoid unknown brands offering deep discounts

As Tshifularo warns: “If the discount being offered is way out of sync with anything else on that street, that must give you a hint that something might not be right.”
